Willing Spirits by Phyllis Schieber

Phyllis Schieber’s graceful debut novel is the story of two friends leading lives most women will find familiar. As Jane Hoffman and Gwen Baker attempt to understand their roles as daughters, wives, mothers and lovers, they depend on their friendship to cushion their disenchantment and to celebrate their triumphs.

Jane Hoffman, a schoolteacher in her forties, is forced to confront her reasons for remaining in an unhappy marriage when she finds her husband, Arnold, has been unfaithful. His indiscretion hurls Jane into a new life that is alternately terrifying and gratifying. Her love for her daughter Caroline is also tested when an unforeseen event forces Jane to prove that a mother’s love has no boundaries. As Jane negotiates her own murky logic for making the choices she has, she comes to see herself as far more able than she had ever thought.

Gwen Baker, also a teacher and in her forties, survives a rigid Southern upbringing only to marry an egotistical and cruel professor who later abandons her, leaving her to raise their sons, Matt and Ethan, alone. And while she occasionally takes a lover, nothing really satisfies her. It is Jane who ultimately coaxes Gwen out of her isolation. Together they discover that the conflicting and binding roles women assume be endured without other women. Even after Gwen meets Daniel, a colleague’s husband, and finds love, it is Jane who offers the spiritual solace that only another woman can.

Willing Spirits is no ordinary love story. It is a sensual and understanding story about the struggle to heal from failed maternal relationships, the passionate love women feel for their children, the lure of sexual desire and attachment to men who consistently disappoint, and the bond women share that makes it all tolerable. Suffused with humor and tenderness, Willing Spirits is a celebration of love in all its guises—between man and woman, between parent and child, and above all, between women.

About Author Phyllis Schieber:
The first great irony of my life was that I was born in a Catholic hospital. My parents, survivors of the Holocaust, had settled in the South Bronx among other new immigrants. In the mid-fifties, my family moved to Washington Heights. The area offered scenic views of the Hudson River and the Palisades, as well as access to Fort Tryon Park and the mysteries of the Cloisters. I graduated from George Washington High School. I graduated from high school at sixteen, went on to Bronx Community College, transferred to and graduated from Herbert H. Lehman College with a B.A. in English and a New York State license to teach English. I earned my M.A. in Literature from New York University and later my M.S. as a developmental specialist from Yeshiva University. I have worked as a high school English teacher and as a learning disabilities specialist. My first novel , Strictly Personal, for young adults, was published by Fawcett-Juniper. Willing Spirits was published by William Morrow. My most recent novel, The Sinner’s Guide to Confession, was released by Berkley Putnam. In March 2009, Berkley Putnam will issue the first paperback publication of Willing Spirits.

For the past eight months Brian O'Leary at Magellan Media has partnered with Random House and O'Reilly Media to rigorously study the "impact of free distribution on paid content," which meant examining both giveaways and unauthorized peer-to-peer distribution. The ultimate objective is to develop "a model that describes instances in which free distribution works or may not work," taking into account the variety of complex influences. The work is still ongoing, and they invite participation from additional publishers.

In the conference session, Chelsea Vaughn at Random House said that for the eight giveaway titles of theirs they studied, "the free downloads were correlated with a slight increase overall sales. We don't know whether the free downloads are what helped keep the sales going or other factors. But they don't seem to hurt sales, which is reassuring, and they may help. And they may help slow a decline that was otherwise happening."

As the report describes it, one Random House sci-fi/horror novel "was promoted heavily around the time of the download [which began right before publication] and sales grew by a third at the time of the free download before dropping to lower, but not small numbers in the weeks that followed." For another sci-fi title with a film tie-in, the promotional download offer "coincided with a 4 percent increase in sales of the mass-market paperback edition that had been released a year earlier. In the four weeks that followed, sales of the print edition were more than 40 percent higher. Sales of the ebook were twice what they had been before the promotion was announced."

In a different promotion, offering a free download of a high-profile literary first novel shortly after publication, it coincided with a rise in CD audiobook sales and ebook sales. But hardcover print sales, "which had been declining, did not improve during the promotion."

For all books in the Random House study, average sales rose 19 percent during the promotional period, and were up 6.5 percent during the defined promotional and post-promotional periods. There was great divergence however, with actual sales ranging from a 74 percent decline to a 155 percent gain.

For O'Reilly, they monitored three peer-to-peer sites and found only eight frontlist titles from books the house published in 2008. (They also noticed that overall, books comprise a very small share of the files sites such as Pirate Bay and Scribd.) On average, those unauthorized postings were made 20 weeks after publication (the fastest was posted in four weeks). As soon as an unauthorized download was detected, they monitored sales of that title--and on average, sales rose 6.5 percent here, too. O'Reilly's Mac Slocum said in the conference session the minimal piracy and negligible effect on sales was surprising. "There's just not a lot going on there. That was a real shocker to me."

What do you think? Many of our authors aggressively "give" content from their books away. We've seen where it positively affects sales, but more importantly, increases the authors database if they are smart about capturing the readers names and email addresses! That is where the real value is for the authors!

These days, there seem to be two kinds of authors: givers and takers. Giver authors are quick to give content to readers and prospects. The right information is worth more than a gift and often even worth far more than money.

In fact giving is now a characteristic possessed by successful entrepreneurial authors. I've always known they were blessed with infinite patience and fertile imaginations. I've written in awe of their acute sensitivity and their admirable ego strength. I've raved about their aggressiveness in marketing and their penchant for constant learning.

Now, I'm impressed, but not surprised, at their generosity. They are, every single one of them, generous souls who seem to gain joy by giving things away, by taking their customers and prospects beyond satisfaction and into true bliss. They learn what those people want and need and then they try to give them what they want and need absolutely free.

The result? Delighted prospects who become customers and delighted customers who become repeat and referral customers. Those are huge payoffs during the days of a bear market.

Meet Tony Napoli

I am in the process of reading Tony Napoli’s book “My Father, My Don,” and let me tell you this is one gripping book. Unlike any true crime/mob book you have ever read. A story so well told, so gripping yet so morbidly entertaining.

Tony was in Las Vegas last week doing a book signing at Cheesecake and Crime, (awesome bookstore with great cheesecake), and I was able to meet him. Such a gentleman. In all ways of the word.

All I can say is that if you were to call up central casting and ask for an actor who looked like a mobster, Tony Napoli is the guy they would send you. Honestly. The dress, the manners, the accent, and the hand gestures… straight out of the movies…

He would also be the guy to call if you wanted to know how the mob gained power and influence over American labor, and the building of Las Vegas into the entertainment capital of the world.

As the title explains; A son’s journey from organized crime to sobriety… the son is Tony Napoli, his father was the head of the all powerful Ginovese crime family. So you know it’s definitely not your ordinary coming of age, coming out of the mob type book.

It’s a tell all book, but it’s a great tell all book. Starting with Tony dissecting a punk who molested his daughter, and how that brought him great clarity and ended of his crime life while opening up another new chapter of sobriety, redemption, and charity.

From there, you are taken on a wild, page turning ride that basically covers the history of organized crime in America, as well as the growth of Las Vegas as the entertainment capital of the world. All told in vivid first person accounts, as he lived them, in detail.

Tony talks in stories as he drives home the points of honesty, integrity, family, honor, and patriotism. This is sort of odd when you think about his family and the family business… a business which is seen as nothing but a bunch of law breakers, murders and thugs. All well earned monikers Tony would agree.

In the end you are left breathless, and wondering just how he really could have survived all of that and lived to tell about it. After everything he has lived through. The ups, the downs, the painful loses, and the death and destruction. You will be pleasantly surprised to learn about his latest passions in life, and the new worlds that he is exploring.

Check it out. You won’t be disappointed. My Father, My Don

Political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson in his new book, How Obama Won, predicted that the economy would hold deep peril for the new Obama administration. Hutchinson reviews in his book how polls repeatedly showed during the campaign that the economy; or rather the train wreck of the economy was really the only thing on voter’s minds.

Hutchinson also told why and how economic woes would continue to be the only thing on American’s minds after the election and that they would judge Obama’s performance on how quickly and effectively he dealt with the economic crisis.

Hutchinson assesses whether Obama’s vow to cut taxes for the middle-class, clean up Wall Street's mess, and create lots of jobs for everybody would do much too stem America’s economic worries. Hutchinson shows how the economy continues to bear out the old political truism that it's the economy stupid that wins or loses presidential elections as well as makes or breaks presidential administrations.

In How Obama Won, Hutchinson, reminds that from day one of campaign 2008 the enshrined article of political faith was that voters were so furious at Bush for causing massive plant closings, farm failures, corporate bungling, fraud and corruption, the housing collapse, soaring gas prices, and the wholesale flight of jobs to the far corners of the planet.
